How Houseplants Boost Your Mood

We all know that feeling when we walk into a room filled with greenery and instantly feel a little calmer, a little happier. But is it just in our heads? As it turns out, science says no, houseplants really do make us feel better, and in more ways than you might think!

Here at Little Purple Bloom, plants are a huge part of my daily life, and I genuinely believe that surrounding yourself with greenery is one of the simplest and most rewarding things you can do for your wellbeing.

Here’s why:

They Reduce Stress

Studies have shown that simply being around plants can lower cortisol levels, that’s the hormone our bodies produce when we’re stressed. Even tending to a small houseplant for a few minutes can help shift your mood and bring you back to the present moment. Think of it as a little green reset button!

They Improve Air Quality

Certain houseplants help filter toxins from the air and increase oxygen levels in your home. While the effect is subtle, cleaner air means better sleep, clearer thinking, and more energy throughout the day.

They Encourage Mindfulness

Caring for plants naturally encourages you to slow down and be present. Checking soil moisture, spotting new growth, or simply sitting quietly with your plants, these small acts of attention are a form of mindfulness that can really help with anxiety and overwhelm.

A person wearing gloves holds a small plant with roots exposed, next to an empty pot. The scene suggests gardening or planting. Earthy tones convey a calm, nurturing vibe.

This is something I feel strongly about at Little Purple Bloom, the idea that pausing, whether to tend a plant or make something by hand, is genuinely good for us.

They Give a Sense of Purpose

There’s something deeply satisfying about nurturing a living thing. Watching a propagation root, spotting a new leaf unfurling, or successfully reviving a struggling plant, these small wins give us a real sense of achievement and connection to the natural world.

They Make Your Space Feel Good

Beyond the science, plants simply make a space feel more alive, warm, and welcoming. A few well-placed plants can completely transform a room and make it feel like a sanctuary, somewhere you actually want to spend time.

My Personal Favourites for Boosting Mood:

Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)
Super easy to care for and tough as nails, this plant helps purify indoor air and even releases oxygen at night, perfect for bedrooms or cosy corners.

A collection of spider plants and other houseplants with vibrant green leaves sits on a balcony railing, set against a blurred, lush green background, conveying a serene, refreshing tone.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii)
Elegant leaves and white blooms give a peaceful vibe, and it’s also known for filtering indoor pollutants while adding a sense of calm.

Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
Friendly, fun, and forgiving — spider plants grow quickly and their arching foliage lifts a room’s energy while helping cleanse the air.

Tips for Mood-Boosting Plant Care

Group plants together: A mini indoor jungle boosts humidity and creates a sense of calm more than a single plant alone.
Match light to plant needs: Bright, indirect light suits most of the list above, but some, like Snake Plants do fine in lower light too.
Keep care simple: Most of these don’t need fancy attention, just a relaxed watering routine and a cheerful spot in your home.

You don’t need a houseful of plants to feel the benefits – even one or two in the right spot can make a real difference to how you feel at home.

Why not start small? Pick one plant that appeals to you, give it a little care and attention, and see how it makes you feel. I’d love to hear about your plant journey – feel free to share in the comments below! 🌿
